Thanks for your interest in my instructional design and training services. For years, I’ve taken to heart the words spoken by Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and Son, and the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
The above verse is known as the Great Commission that we use to compel believers to go and impact the world, but we have to make sure we are able to fully execute what the Lord was saying. Verse twenty mentions the word Teaching which is translated in Greek as didasko. It means to hold a discourse with others in order to instruct them, deliver didactic discourses, or discharge the office of a teacher.
Regardless of what titles we have, we function in the office of teachers. Pastors spend a considerable amount of time studying to get sermons, and if members spend as much time digesting the content, they would increase their chances of becoming a high-performing doer of God’s word. Fortunate for us, they can rely on books and CDs to revisit messages, but they still lack insight to transform the spiritual truths they hear into a practical reality.
Eliminating Skills Gaps
How nice would it be if 100% knowledge transfer occurred every time you spoke? Unfortunately, that will never happen which is why the Apostle James wrote, “For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
If the Apostle James lived during our time, he would have classified the above scripture as a gap in skills, which lead us back to the Great Commission. An effective way of reducing the risk of believers hearing the word and not doing what they hear is repurposing your messages beyond Midweek Bible studies. Jesus reference to teaching was meant to give instructions so believers can become high-performing doers of God’s word.
Midweek Bible study is supposed to be the time to expound upon messages and move believers into action. However, due to time constraints, the existential gap between what believers hear and what they do remains in place. Corporate America call it skills gap which is why they have professional course designers to apply their knowledge of course design to eliminate the gap in skills.
Adding motion to your messages
Modern psychology calls James discovery psycho-motor skills, which is simply muscular activity associated with mental activity. In short, it’s content in motion. Many Pastors are already under strain to prepare sermons and balance other ministry related duties. As a result, many messages are not given the opportunity to move believers to action. After they are preached, they are quickly escorted back into the catalog of messages until they are ready for action again.
Corporations embrace the idea that the death of an organization is the inability to recognize when they are hemorrhaging money, and a big cause for profit hemorrhage are skill gaps among employees. In fact, CareerBuilder reported that companies lose thousands of dollars when they refuse to address the gap in skills. The same is true with the church, when messages are not used to transfer skills, it hinders or delays what the church was commissioned to do. However, when instructional mechanisms are in place to put your messages in motion, it breathes new life into the Great Commission.
From Inspiration to Instructions
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness – 2 Timothy 3:16
